Peninsula Transport has responded to National Highway’s A38 Trerulefoot to Carkeel safety package proposals, currently out for public consultation.
Chairman of Peninsula Transport, Councillor Andrea Davis said: “We welcome the principle of making the route safer and more resilient without having a detrimental impact on the environment. It is vital our transport links are of a high-standard, offer resilience and reliability, and are able to cope with future demand.
“The A38 is one of two key arterial routes connecting Cornwall to the rest of the UK. Not only will this package help to tackle safety issues and the higher-than-average collision rates along the route, it will also help to tackle longstanding bottlenecks and alleviate congestion. Businesses, communities and visitors will feel the benefits of improved reliability and reduced journey times.
“The user needs to be at the heart of any transport scheme, so I encourage those using the road to join the conversation and have your say to help shape the plans. If these measures receive widespread support, we hope that there will be a way to bring forward delivery so that all those who rely on this strategic route can benefit from improvements earlier.
“A well maintained, resilient A38 route will aid future economic growth as part of a wider strategy to improve connectivity and support sustainable growth in Cornwall. It is these types of schemes which enable South West economies to continue to grow and thrive, and collectively help to level up the peninsula. Longer-term, a Route Based Study for the A38 between Exeter and Bodmin is needed.”
